Patrice: If you’re trying to build a student that has the confidence to go out and work in the real world, they have to be doing real world work. So we try to implement design thinking.

Megan: Design thinking is a step by step process. It’s an innovative approach to problem solving with empathy at the heart. So it’s designing for a specific purpose or person.

Amy: When you are trying to solve for a problem, think of the user that you are designing for. How are they experiencing things?

Teacher: People who do not have access to clean water need a way to filter water.

Teacher: She added a wheel and she added some shapes with a spring here.

Teacher: Okay, Allea is going to make the uniform which can be used.

Student: What this time?

Megan: What number would you say this is for turbidity.

Student: Probably a twenty–

Megan: Because of design thinking, we have students that can think very creatively. They’re not afraid to solve a problem. They understand how to share ideas. They understand how to get positive and negative feedback. They’re becoming very reflective learners.

Student: We might be able to like, put another tube in there, so that it’s more like, grounded.
