Using Evidence of Students’ Learning Beyond Grades
Grades are only a starting point for providing appropriate challenges that help students deepen their understanding and make meaningful progress.

Go to My Saved Content.Many of our students’ most meaningful learning experiences come with a level of uncertainty and sometimes even failure. That doesn’t mean learning must always be difficult, but some of our greatest growth happens when an experience asks us to do something new.
You may remember a class where you worked incredibly hard for a B and learned far more than you did in another class where earning an A came easily. The letter grade alone doesn’t capture the struggle, revision, and persistence that helped you become more capable.
The same distinction matters when we look at our students. A student can earn an A without learning very much, and the inverse is also true: A student can struggle while learning a tremendous amount.
Grades give us information about student performance, but they don’t necessarily tell us how much a student’s knowledge or skills have grown. Grades may also reflect work completion, organization, participation, or meeting deadlines alongside specific academic understanding. That distinction matters when grades influence access to advanced coursework, enrichment opportunities, recognition, and scholarships.
Students also develop beliefs about learning itself through the experiences they have in school. When success repeatedly comes easily, they may begin to associate being capable with not having to struggle. They have fewer opportunities to experience effort, persistence, and mistakes as normal parts of learning. When genuine challenge eventually arrives, the effort it requires can feel like evidence that they are less capable, rather than evidence that they are learning something new.
LOOKING FOR STUDENT LEARNING BEYOND LETTER GRADES
If grades are only one piece of evidence, what else should we as educators look for? We can look at the questions students ask, the connections they make, the complexity they engage with, and, perhaps most important, what they can understand or do now that they couldn’t before.
Lev Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) offers a useful way to think about this distinction by asking us to focus on the space between what students can already accomplish independently and what they can accomplish with appropriate support. When students consistently work within what they can already do, they may perform well without many opportunities to extend their thinking or develop new capabilities.
But when we push students to engage with tasks that are outside of their current ability, we give them the opportunity to think, adapt, persist, and eventually do things on their own that they once needed support to do.
One question can help us distinguish between performance (letter grades) and growth: What new understanding or capability did this student develop?
Consider a student who completes 20 math problems correctly. If the practice is helping them become more accurate, efficient, or confident, it is doing useful work. But if they could already solve those problems accurately and independently, completing 20 more may demonstrate mastery, but it does not extend their knowledge or skills.
The same question applies across subjects: A successful essay or science investigation might confirm knowledge without requiring a student to work within the ZPD. Success is real in each case; the instructional question is whether the learning required the student to stretch beyond what they could already do independently.
CREATING MEANINGFUL CHALLENGE TO SUPPORT STUDENT GROWTH
Creating challenge doesn’t mean manufacturing struggle. It means making sure students regularly encounter learning that requires something new from them.
Let’s look back at the two examples above. If a student has already demonstrated that they can solve the math problems accurately and independently, the teacher could invite the student to do one of these:
- Solve one problem in two different ways and decide which strategy works better
- Look at a solution with a mistake and explain where the thinking went wrong
- Create a new problem using the same concept, but add a twist or a new constraint
Similarly, rather than repeating a familiar science investigation, a teacher might ask the student to do one of these:
- Change one variable and decide how to test it
- Identify something that could affect the results and explain how they would account for it
- Consider an unexpected result and explain how it might change their conclusion
Even one of these changes can shift the learning from repeating what a student already knows how to do toward thinking more deeply, making decisions, or applying their understanding in a new way.
Creating meaningful challenge doesn’t have to mean more lesson plans for teachers. Instead, it’s an instructional mindset: When students demonstrate that they already know or can do what we planned to teach, that information can guide what we change next.
There are many ways to change learning experiences for students, but here are a few simple places to start:
- Changing depth by asking, Why does this work? When wouldn’t it? What is the underlying idea?
- Changing complexity by introducing another variable, perspective, constraint, or competing idea
- Changing context by asking students to apply what they know in a new situation
- Changing autonomy by giving students greater responsibility for the question they pursue, the approach they use, or the way they demonstrate understanding
These shifts can happen within the work that students are already doing. A familiar math problem can become a comparison of strategies, while a comprehension question can invite students to explore another perspective. The goal isn’t more work for the teacher or student, but more meaningful thinking from the student.
The key is to look beyond whether a student was successful and ask what the learning required: Did they revise their thinking, make a new connection, change strategies, or become more independent? When a grade doesn’t seem to reflect what a student knows or can do, look at what else may be influencing it, such as work completion, organization, participation, or deadlines.
You can also ask students to share what learning is new and what has felt challenging: “What can you do now that you couldn’t do before? What felt too easy? Where did you have to change your thinking?” Their answers can reveal both growth and areas where greater challenge may be needed.
Grades give us useful information, but they are a starting point rather than a conclusion. Looking at what students already know, what has changed, and where they may need greater challenge or support helps us make the decision that matters most: what their learning needs to look like next.
