What’s Your Take: Who Are Students Becoming With AI?
May 19, 2026
I don’t think it’s enough for teachers to tell students what is and isn’t allowed with AI, though so much of our current discourse seems centered there.
To be clear, students do need expectations. In my experience, they actually want clarity about what counts as acceptable use, what crosses a line, and why.
But if we stop at rules, we risk making every AI conversation about cheating. One question I’ve started asking my students is: Who are you becoming when you use AI? Are you becoming more curious, capable, and reflective? Or more dependent, passive, and disconnected from your own thinking?
I’m curious what other AI-related questions or conversations other teachers are having with their students as we all try to make sense of this moment.
