Summer school planning is underway! What things have you seen be a big success in a summer school program?

What are the essentials? What have you seen have the biggest impact? How do you make it fun and engaging? I want to know all things summer school! (I am running K-8 summer school in my district this year, and want to be as prepared as possible !)
