September 2026 Jam Session: How to Build Student Agency in the Classroom

Student agency and self-reliance don’t just happen—they’re built over time through intentional practice. One powerful shift is moving from “my classroom” to “our classroom,” creating more opportunities for students to have a real voice, take meaningful responsibility, and see themselves as active contributors to the learning community.

So, how can you do this in your classroom? Let’s compare notes on a few of the ways this can show up:

→ Where have you given students real ownership? Maybe it’s a space, materials, a classroom decision, or part of a lesson. What helped students take on that responsibility successfully?

→ What does student agency look like day to day in your classroom? Where have you seen it really click—and what do you do when students would rather have you take the lead?

→ How do you help students become more self-reliant without pulling away support too quickly? What helps them gradually take on more responsibility, reflect on their progress, and learn when to ask for help?

Drop into the thread anytime now through Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and come back as often as you like. Toby, Susan, Shannon, and the Edutopia team will be responding in the comments all week.
