Getting to Know Your Students as Writers

When teachers learn their students’ interests and strengths as writers, they can better support them—and writing time is more rewarding for everyone.

August 18, 2022

“Teachers very often say that writing time is the hardest time of the day. Students have so many issues getting started and knowing what to write. But when teachers really know their students as writers,” says literacy coach Melissa Morrison, “time will not be wasted on teaching strategies that students either aren’t ready for or have already mastered. Teachers will know exactly what students need and how they can best support them.”

For more strategies, see Morrison’s Edutopia article “Tips for Guiding Students to Use Writing Time Effectively” and her Teaching to Transform website.
