60-Second Strategy: Whisper It In Your Hand

A simple routine gives everyone more think time before sharing their responses—and helps manage students’ enthusiasm for shouting out answers.

A common issue in many classrooms—particularly those with young learners—is students yelling out their answers. While the eagerness is welcomed and appreciated, it can be frustrating for teachers and students alike, because when the same few quick-thinking kids blurt out the answer every time, it can rob others of an opportunity to have enough think time to come up with something of their own. 

At Clinton Valley Elementary School in Mount Clemens, Michigan, kindergarten teacher Michelle Susalla uses a simple, playful routine to channel that energy and excitement while ensuring all students have a voice. The strategy, called “Whisper It In Your Hand,” creates space for both processing and participation.

First, she poses a question. Then, instead of calling out, she asks students to whisper their response into their hand—holding it in their fist as if they’re keeping it safe. This small, imaginative step creates a pause to allow all students think time.

Because not every student arrives at an answer at the same time, this built-in pause ensures that everyone has a chance to process. As students raise their hands in tight fists—answers ready—Susalla can quickly see when everyone in the class has arrived at an answer.

Finally, on the count of three, students “throw” their answers in the air and shout together. “It gives kids time to think about the answer to a question, and it also makes everybody responsible for their learning,” Susalla says.

In addition to managing students’ enthusiasm for calling out, this routine also transforms participation into a collective, joyful moment—one that keeps energy high while honoring the learning process.

Simple, intentional strategies like this can make a big difference, helping classrooms become spaces where every student has the time to think before they speak.
