3 Tech Talks That Set the Tone for the Year

As dialogue grows more heated around the role of AI, laptops, tablets, and other digital tools in schools, many educators are recognizing that successful technology integration depends less on the tools themselves and more on the norms established around them. Technology is an integral part of most students’ daily lives, making thoughtful classroom tech talks to set expectations more important than ever. 

The beginning of the school year offers a natural opportunity to build those norms. Rather than waiting until distractions or questions arise, dedicating time to a few intentional discussions helps establish a shared understanding of how technology will support learning throughout the year.

One valuable conversation centers on artificial intelligence. Students enter with varying levels of familiarity and comfort with AI, and expectations often differ dramatically from one classroom to another. Opening the year by surveying students’ experiences can provide useful insight into how they already engage with these tools. From there, teachers can explain their approach to AI use while inviting students to discuss situations in which AI may strengthen learning—and others in which it may undermine it. Bringing students into the conversation helps create shared guidelines instead of simply setting rules.

Establishing predictable device routines is another important step. One-to-one devices have expanded opportunities in many ways, but they have also introduced new challenges around attention and classroom management. Clear routines for when devices should be open, closed, or put away can reduce unnecessary distractions and create smoother transitions throughout the day.

It can also be helpful to simply distinguish technology as a learning tool rather than a source of entertainment. Many students associate screens with games, videos, social media, or messaging outside of school. Within the classroom, however, technology serves a different purpose: supporting research, creation, collaboration, and problem-solving. Reinforcing that distinction—while actively supporting students as they work with digital tools—can help cultivate more intentional habits and stronger engagement.

These three conversations can establish a foundation for responsible technology use that extends well beyond the first weeks of school.
