This time of year is always exciting for me. I love the cyclic nature of education. For me, this leg of the cycle marks the end of the old year and the start of a brand new year. Over the last few cycles, I've seen so many educators retire. I've watched (and participated in) the consequent transitions--teachers moving into administrative roles and administrators moving into larger leadership positions.

I remember my first year stepping out of the classroom into a dual teaching/admin role a decade ago. (To clarify, I don't think that leadership and 'admin' are synonymous. Taking on a Lead Teacher or Department Chair position is leadership.) My principal encouraged me to take this leap. I was full of questions. Very hard on myself. And while I was eager to learn, as I look at my development over the last 10 years, I had so, so much to learn...and I'm still learning.

New leaders wrestle with uncertainty, self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and more. Sometimes, transition looks like leaving the classroom and leading the same teachers you taught next to, just months ago. That was my story.

...

Now, if you happen to be transitioning into a new leadership space, what would you say is the biggest question on your mind you look forward?

If you are an experienced leader, what is the best advice you can provide a teacher or administrator moving into a new leadership position?
