How do you keep your spark for teaching?

As an educator, I sometimes wonder what keeps me going. Teaching can feel incredibly daunting, yet I’m reminded daily of its beauty.

A few ways that I keep my spark:

Be a marigold. Find a marigold.

Marigolds are known in gardening as a companion plant. Cult of Pedagogy used this gardening reference to illustrate that if “you find at least one marigold in your school and stay close to them, you will grow.” Simply put, surround yourself with positive, supportive people. These colleagues will help be a safe space to land.

Ground yourself.

Use micro rituals, tiny intentional actions lasting a few minutes that ground you and your nervous system. For me, it’s deep breathing, wearing a positive thought that I can look down at in times of stress and acknowledging what’s within my sphere of control to avoid getting into a negative rut.

Avoid social media trends.

Remind yourself that social media is a highlight reel. Be true to yourself and your passion as an educator. If it causes you too much stress, it’s ok to step away.

Get involved.

Use your teacher voice to help with decision-making. Educate yourself in areas that you are passionate about. Join your school’s curriculum committee. Read your district’s board agendas and minutes. Be okay with asking questions that others may be afraid to ask.

Be like Ted Lasso. Believe.

Choose hope, self-worth, and trust in one another over fear, cynicism, and internal doubt.

How do you keep your spark? What keeps you going?
