I teach digital media literacy to high school students and have been looking for practical ways to help them understand the concept of content ownership on social media platforms. One real world example I use in class is Instagram since most students are already familiar with it. A common misconception among students is that once they post something on Instagram they can always get it back, when in reality the platform offers no built in way to retrieve your own previously published photos or videos in original quality. I have been using this as a teaching moment to discuss platform dependency and the importance of maintaining your own digital archives. I recently introduced students to browser based media retrieval tools as a practical demonstration of how original quality files can be recovered from public posts, which sparked a great discussion about digital ownership, data privacy, and responsible content management. Has anyone else used similar real world examples to teach digital literacy concepts and what approaches have worked best in your classroom.
