Virginia Goatley, PhD

Faculty Member

Virginia Goatley is a faculty member in the Reading Department at the University at Albany - SUNY. A former preschool and first grade teacher, she received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology/Literacy at Michigan State University. She has been a principal investigator or co-PI on research projects funded by the Institute of Educational Sciences (IES/US Dept of Ed), Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE/US Dept of Ed), New York Higher Education Corporation, and National Research Center for English Learning and Achievement (CELA). Her publications from these projects have appeared in several journals including, Reading Research Quarterly, Reading and Writing Quarterly, Language Arts, Language and Literacy Spectrum, Reading Research and Instruction, and Journal of Educational Research. On leave from the University at Albany-SUNY in 2011-12, she was Director of Research for the International Reading Association. Dr. Goatley served as a faculty member in the Reading Department since 1995, including administrative roles as Acting Department Chair, Vice Dean, and Associate Dean for Professional Studies in the School of Education. She is currently a member of the Accreditation Panel for the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). She is a regular participant in national efforts for teacher education and literacy instruction.
