Kate Selkirk

Math Educator, NYC DOE

I have been teaching in the NYC Department of Education since 2005 and began my career as a New York City Teaching Fellow. I teach Codeworlds at Quest to Learn which blends math and writing content. I am inspired by travel and took a sabbatical last year to travel and work abroad at Myanmar International School Yangon. I have also travelled to Ecuador & Madagascar through an Earthwatch Educator Fellowship to research climate change and wildlife conservation. I love to use NYC as an extension of the classroom and have organized many trips to locations like MoMA, The Highline, and Coney Island’s Luna Park. I was a lead teacher at the Summer Science institute at Queens College where I collaborated with organizations such as the New York Hall of Science and the Bronx Zoo to create and implement an engaging summer program for New York City Science educators. I hold a BA in English and American Literature from NYU and a Masters degree in Mathematics Education. I have presented at numerous local conferences and led professional development throughout the NYC. Finally, I love to design innovative and intriguing ways for my students to encounter mathematical phenomena.
