What are your systems for helping students take ownership over missing work?

I was chatting with a teacher friend about how overwhelming it can be for both students and ourselves when the missing work starts to pile up. We want to help students get back on track, but at the same time, help them take the lead rather than feeling like we're "chasing" each assignment.

I know that one way to look at missing work would be to check the gradebook if you use an LMS like Canvas, but I'm wondering if people have other structures or systems that they use. A standard checklist? A paper folder? Something else? Would love your creative ideas!
