For secondary teachers, how do you actively engage students on the first day (or week) of school so they don’t spend six class periods listening to six teachers talk about their classes?

A mentor teacher told me her goal on the first day of school was to make students want to come back for the second day. Reading aloud my syllabus, rules, etc. doesn't seem all that exciting. What do you do on that first day to get students excited for the next day in your classroom?
