Teaching young students to tune in to facial expressions—even when partially obscured by a mask—can support the development of emotional literacy skills.

Emotional literacy allows us to understand our feelings and express them.
We can teach emotional literacy by using feelings charts, modeling our own management of emotions, and helping students name their emotions and think about their reactions. (Download a printable PDF of a feelings chart showing children's faces both masked and unmasked.)
