Thank you for posting this heartfelt article. We as educators need to relate everything we teach to the real world and what is going on around us. We have to teach students HOW to care otherwise they won't understand the affects that we all have on each other. Thanks again!

thanks for this pensive piece. more than the lesson in the book, the students need to read the lessons on humanity because in this humanity-barren age, that's is what can help them become humanbeings. i love the songs also.

A powerful reflection, Elena. Thank you for your ideas. I used some of them with one of my senior classes in quite a wide-ranging discussion. What I would encourage teachers to do, especially with senior students, is use Mandela's life to discuss the way history is written - and avoid at all measures the temptation to airbrush Mandela's past. Instead, it is an opportunity to investigate the grey areas that make the study of people and history so fascinating.

Thank you for sharing. I love your idea of "bucking" lesson plans in order to address Mandela's life and legacy. Sadly, I think that would be discouraged in most schools.
