This discussion is very enlightening. It is a great argument to the idea that increased technology leads to decreased social skills. While this can be true, this article really illustrates how teachers can use technology to positively impact social skills. Sometimes all it takes is thinking outside of the box to get all students fully engaged in a lesson. Thanks for your insight!

Important Topic to Discuss. Research to shed light on this also.

Joan, Thanks for writing about the exciting connections between technology and social-emotional development. Technology has the capability to encourage social and emotional growth and development when used in developmentally appropriate ways and with content that builds skills and opportunities by supporting and encouraging interaction among children. My organization is most interested in early learners and we’ve created a learning system on multi-touch tables (WePlaySmart). We invite you and your readers to see our recent field test where we found evidence of increased social-emotional skills @ http://ow.ly/cecE8

Thanks for sharing this great summary. I was excited to engage in a discussion about how we model and define failure in education, as well as the power of technology to offer multiple mediums of expression, allowing everyone to have a voice.

Awesome article. Great ideas being thrown around - educators really need to realize the positive potential of technology, and not see it as just an obstacle.

A fantastic discussion!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this rich discussion. Like JoAnn, I continue to think of the many benefits that using technology purposefully can have: igniting students' passions, connecting them to a world beyond their immediate reach, and reinforcing the idea that working hard to tackle challenges leads to intrinsic rewards and further motivation! I appreciate the opportunity to reflect on this wonderful learning experience here. Thanks Edutopia :-)
