What are you talking about? I am working with students at that time also. My students that help others are not forced to help. They volunteer to help out our classmates before official school time starts by themselves. Some people including children enjoy helping others out, out of kindness. I teach my students we are a class, not an epsiode of survivor where they try to prove that they are better than others. We cheer eachother on. My students are very bright and well versed. I have a very fostering, caring environment in my classroom. I'm not sure why you are implying that I don't work in my own classroom or why you are questioning kids aiding kids in learning during practice time. The whole point of this article is fostering growth in fun ways. Please leave negativity off of the article comments.

Are they unpaid tutors or do you pay them for the work they do for you?

I take my students to class

I take my students to class 30 minutes early each day before school starts. They come to class at 8 instead of 830. This "tutoring "is done during this time. I make use of all of my instructional time for enrichment and scaffolding for those that need it. This extra 30 minutes of peer help enhances my low learner skills and does not hinder my high achievers learning time.

Yes, I had the same

Yes, I had the same question...generally, I don't tend to pair high-achieving/gifted students with other students that are on the opposite end of the spectrum academically. My goal is for content to be at an appropriate level for all students. My fear with pairing the opposite levels is that the high-achieving/gifted students tend to become the tutors and do not learn anything new.

I use this as an extra

I use this as an extra activity when they are finished with breakfast earlier. My students enjoy helping others and several want to be teachers.learning from peers is a great way to show gains. No they are not gifted children, my higher students do receive plenty of enrichment activities and work with eachother on a regular basis so they push each other to excel web more.

Why?

+1

Why would #18, Pair your higher achievers with lower achievers, help the high achiever learn new material? Wouldn't it make more sense to pair the high achievers together since they will both be above grade level and working on similar advanced content? Or do you mean high achievers who are not also advanced and/or gifted?

The Creative Teacher..

Creativity is natural and every human being is endowed with it. Creativity is all about the no. of options that one can create for a given situation. If all of us are creative then why is it that we do not demonstrate Creativity? This is mostly because of the various barriers that block us from being creative. If you make a conscious effort to get rid of these barriers then creativity flows out spontaneously. This is a way of realizing our potential.
