I'm surprised that you forgot to mention something about internet security software. The internet is like a community where different people reside. Some people have good intentions, but some do not. That is why, when you are browsing the internet, it's probably a good idea to have a firewall, a good antivirus and antispyware installed on your computer.

looking for ideas

I was referred to you from Edutopia's Elana Leoni. We are a small 575 student (soon to be 800) public charter school in Denver. We've made significant headlines by our academic success, having recently announced our second graduating class, of which 100% were accepted into 4 year colleges. We run a school based (not district supported) 1 to 1 program in our high school, purchasing and managing all the equipment. Having recently added a 6th grade (7th & 8th to be added over the next two years), we run a middle school and high school with over 650 computers, almost all of them mobile student laptops on a 4 year life cycle.

Managing the in/out, warranty, damage, theft, repair, reimaging, etc., not to mention the network/systems administration, 50-60 projectors, printers, and academic integration and overall coordination, personnel management and direction with about 3 FTE's is quite a challenge.

Due to our academica success, we are also beginning the process of planning replication.

I'm looking for ideas and contacts for any other public schools who are doing this to swap ideas and support as we try to improve our systems & procedures and look toward replication. I'd be interested to know if you know of any others in our situation (not in reference to the replication plans).

thanks for your assistance and ideas.

the importance of analogies

I like how the author uses analogies to make computer technology easier to understand. Equating a web browser to a vehicle, and plug-ins to car 'features' like cupholders or cd players, goes a long way to help educators better 'translate' computer technology to their students.
