WELCOME!
This module helps introduce the role of principal as instructional leader.
Teacher development is a common theme in any school leadership training program, so the traditional textbooks will provide a foundation. This module offers examples of how to build on that foundation in a variety of settings, illustrated by master school leaders. These "professors of practice" are meeting the challenges of teacher development and supervision each day in their schools.
Another important aspect of this module is the link that is made from that foundation in the textbooks to collateral materials and approaches. The Application Activities provide opportunities to practice the translation from theory to practice.
What Works? The GLEF Web site has entire sections devoted to what's working in K-12 schools and ongoing professional development. Time spent reviewing these articles will produce a list of schools that have teacher development programs in place. These practical, real-world examples can serve as a basis for identifying common features and the implications for educational leaders, a direct connection to research and textbook studies.
Most obvious in all of the stories and examples are the benefits for students. This continuing thread throughout the GLEF Web site makes it easier for school leaders to tie teacher development to the central purpose of school in their community: the education and well-being of young people.
Each Application Activity links to various GLEF articles and contact information, correlated with content derived from leadership standards and selected textbooks on the principalship. Each activity has teaching aids, and is available as a separate Portable Document Format (PDF) file that you can have students print, or you can print and copy as needed as a handout in your class.
In the section, Resources, you will find a PowerPoint® presentation, related articles, and GLEF products that will enhance your curriculum.
