Julie Coiro

Associate Professor of Education at the University of Rhode Island

I am an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Rhode Island where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy and research design. Previous to that, I worked as Co-Director of The New Literacies Research Lab at the University of Connecticut. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education with a focus on students with learning disabilities, a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New Orleans with a focus on reading, and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology in the area of Cognition and Instruction from the University of Connecticut.

I am a former middle school and elementary school teacher and have provided professional development to teachers around the country for the past 20 years. I speak nationally and offer professional development in the areas of reading comprehension strategy instruction, the new literacies of the Internet, and effective practices for technology integration and professional development. Most recently, my research has focused on developing a series of assessments to measure online reading comprehension proficiency in ways that inform classroom instruction. I have published work in venues such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Educational Leadership, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and The International Handbook of Literacy and Technology. I am also co-editor of the Handbook of Research on New Literacies and co-author of the 4th edition of the book Teaching with the Internet K-12: New Literacies for New Times.
