No Impact Curriculum-Earth Friendly living

Resource Type:
Curriculum
Lesson Plans
Online Tool
Description: The No Impact Project, inspired by Colin Beavan, has just released a free secondary-school curriculum, the No Impact Curriculum, focused on earth-friendly living. When Colin Beavan (aka “No Impact Man”, http://noimpactman.typepad.com/) and his family decided to try living for a year in New York City without doing any harm to the environment (the “No Impact Experiment”) they attracted worldwide media attention. Beavan wrote about his experience in No Impact Man (Farrar, Straus & Giroux), and a Sundance-selected film of the same title recently was released in theaters nationwide. Why all the fuss? Because the Beavans traded their old habits for more environmentally-friendly ones—and figured out that doing so actually made their lives happier, healthier and more abundant. People around the world started talking about these discoveries, and thousands have since tried their own No Impact Experiment. The No Impact Curriculum is divided into five individual lessons, each co-authored by environmental nonprofit leaders, and focuses on: • Consumption • Energy • Food • Transportation • Water You can DOWNLOAD IT HERE, http://noimpactproject.org/educators-middle-high-school-environment-curriculum-html/ Each multi-media lesson incorporates Beavan's book and the "No Impact Man" film to encourage middle and high school students to explore the effects that their everyday behavior has on the environment, as well as their health and well-being. The lessons also will challenge students to think about how the systems in our present society influence our lifestyle choices in ways that often are detrimental to the environment. Ultimately, this curriculum will guide students to take action both individually and with others to bring about positive change. The curriculum is standalone and there is no need to buy the book. kidEarth: Kids Around the World Sing 12-Year-Old's Global-Warming Song

Resource Type:
Curriculum
Green Design Projects
Online Tool
Service Learning Projects
Description: KidEarth and its "100 Generations" song is an international global-warming music project California sixth-grader Aitan Grossman created for children all over the world to sing to raise awareness about the climate change. Schoolchildren in Africa (Botswana and Ethiopia), Europe (France), South America (Venezuela and Guatemala), and Asia (Taiwan) have joined kidEarth in song already. The more kids who sing Aitan's song, the bigger its impact will be as children everywhere, together, raise the world's awareness about the climate change. Aitan's made it easy -- the song's notes, lyrics, and instrumental tracks are on the Web site. Students can use Aitan's words or write their own and, if they want to join voices together with others around the world, they can post their own "100 Generations" music video next on kidEarth's video page. More information about kidEarth is in "The News" section of the kidEarth Web site, including a feature story posted on Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection Web site and an article written when the kidEarth project was designated a Climate Hero by San Francisco Bay Area environmentalists. All Aitan asks is that schools participating send him their names and cities/towns so he can mention them on the site. Email him at kidEarthus@yahoo.com.
