Wikis

I had no idea that Wiki's were a decade before the other technology tools we are using online. I have always thought of them as difficult and not something I wanted to dabble with. However, I use a lot of goodle tools such as sites, forms, etc... and through this blog article it makes me think I should explore Wikis and see what they can offer to my classroom.

Wikis expand the walls of your classroom. It facilitates more reflection and analysis. Wikis also create a democratic tool to give all a voice. It allows for student to develop and expertise in a particular subject and teaches new tech "literacies". Wikis create a reading and writing tool that can continually be improved.

I didn't realize that wikis have been around for so long! I have just recently heard of them. I have been hearing more and more about them. This was very helpful to me. I did not really know a whole lot about wikis. I like that you listed the reasons why wikis are good to use. I am going to try start exploring wikis a bit more and hopefully try to incorporate them into my lessons sometime in the future. I hadn't even thought of Wikipedia being a wiki! I am sure most people haven't. It is a popular site and many people use it!

You've inspired me to give wikis another try! I used them last year to post student work including videos and other projects. I wanted one place for students to be able to view the work of their peers without having to use another username and password. I did struggle with the formatting, but I am sure that becomes easier with practice.

Thank you Audrey for your blog about wikis...

I just discovered them last Christmas Holiday Vacation, for creating totally easy and fantastically visual Discovery Learning and Projects-based Learning curriculum resources.

I made my first wikispace over the Christmas Holiday for a High School Geometry Adventure class, publishing about 50 pages in 10 days...and it kept growing quickly to about 150 pages by March 2011...so then I paused... realizing I had already created and linked many online "encyclopedias" for an endless Geometry curriculum...

This September, I created an "Arts and Education Adventure" wikispace for Edutopia wikis and it is bursting with about 125 pages of visual and musical excitement for teachers and students (Ben Johnson's recent blog about Gifted (GATE) students led him to view this wiki and he began his commentary with "Wow!"... :-)

I hope more teachers take a look at them and realize how easy and exciting it is to create these resources WITH their students...

Thank you for this opportunity to share and confirm your enthusiasm about wikispaces, free for teachers!
