When I was in college during my undergrad I had a teacher that started the first day of school with having us to create a poem about our lives. I liked having this opportunity to express myself through writing instead of a question and answer session. I had completely forgotten about this activity until I read this blog. I always have some get to know you activities for the beginning of the year and I think this is something that I am going to use.

Elena, thanks for sharing your students’ poetry and ideas. I am definitely going to do some “Where are you from?” poetry with my community college students! Usually, I do the activity on the Poetrysociety.org website “the Envelope Project, “ which I always have fun with, but I’m going to give this a whirl too! I know many of my students have incredible life experience to tell.

On another note, I discovered a creative writing website with my kids this summer, called Cubert’s Cube that is geared for elementary-aged students. We found it very user-friendly and the kids could work on poetry collaboratively with each other, since the site is Wiki based. They also used the “Gallery” feature to draw illustrations for their poems, and were able to publish them on the website. The teacher account settings were easy to figure out and very secure. I don’t think one can ever be too young or too old to enjoy poetry!
