Finishing the School Year Strong

Guest blogger Larry Ferlazzo on the importance of the final weeks of school -- and how this time can effect learning next year.

Was this supposed to be "effect"? Shouldn't it be affect?

Yes. Where did you see this?

You're absolutely right. I have it correct in the book but, for some reason, I transposed it this excerpt. I'll ask Edutopia to make the correction.

Help get 'em ready for next year

I am fortunate enough to know which courses my students are taking next year, so I consult with those teachers to see what I can do to help get students ready for those courses. I differentiate my year-end assignments for those taking AP English Language and for those taking American Literature (regular or Honors).

This is a great time to experiment with new ideas that may be outside your comfort zone. Next year we are adding expository to our standardized testing so we he have been practicing various techniques of teaching it. This has helped students review their writing skills as well.

Great post and wonderful ideas! Just a small note: in the experiment referenced by Kahneman it was the second group that rated the procedure as less painful, even though they had experienced the same amount of pain (for a longer amount of time) as the first group. This should be wonderful information for all of us that tend to punish ourselves for a less-than-successful lesson, unit, or even semester.

This is the time of year for great collaborative projects with your school's librarian/library media tech. Sadly, we're probably too busy collecting textbooks to invite your classes into the library! My dream is to work at a school where every student works on a year-long project, culminating in several days of presentations of their work after testing is over. We used to do an "expert fair" in elementary school, and I was so impressed with the student presentations. I'd love to see something like that in middle school.

Great ideas as usual, Larry! I'm sharing the link to this article with the teachers here at school.
