This is great, foundational material, Jay. Thank you for putting it so clearly and concisely. As I work with teachers in the realm of arts integration, I make the point that constructivist, integrated strategies are completely consistent with the Common Core philosophy. And that makes performance assessment / authentic assessment step front and center, relegating bubble tests to the bottom of the assessment heap. At long last.

Totally agree, we have to set high standards to be able to reach higher-level understanding and thought. This includes using assessments that actually evaluate 'deeper understanding'.
