Need more time to study

I agree that too often we are quick to make poor remarks about public schools, and students in general. I resent the constant negative comments that our students are not doing well, and are not well equipped. I am convinced that if the curriculum was structured for students to have time to learn the materials and concepts in a reasonable amount of time period, instead of being rushed to learn; they would essentially do much better on the state exams.

I feel that the public education system can do a better job of meeting the needs of our students. With that being said, why not talk about what we teachers endure. American schools do their best to educate all students no matter their background.

We are sending teachers to battle without the right equipment and support from some administrators. Many classes (schools) do not have updated books or computers. Some computer labs are so old that many times the computers do not work or the software malfunctions. How can we compete in a global world when we are using outdated methods? Administrators are so concerned with state testing scores that, they are penalizing the teachers for not make higher scores Instead, they should help the teachers develop or buy materials that improve scores.

We are teachers, and we do our best, but the burden must be placed on the students and their families. Why do I say this, you may ask? Firstly, students do not have their supplies for classes. I see so many students with name brand clothes on and expensive electronic devices. When did being fashionable out way being prepared for class and learning? I grew up in a large family and we always had our supplies. In those day parents took pride in buying supplies for school and they lasted most of the year. Secondly, we have students failing, but they will not attend tutorials. Thirdly, teachers have meetings and parents do not show up; some do not return phone calls or sign failing reports. Fourthly, we educate these students for a few years, but parents have to educate them for life. Parents must get back to making education a priority. Some students have too many after school activities like soccer, volleyball, and basketball, etc. School work must come before these activities. Parents must support the teachers in educating their children.

The students’ support team must make education a priority, demand and enforce that before anything else. Once this is done, then the public education system will become a leader in education again.

The American Education System

One thing that's never recognized with American education statistcis is the fact that America takes every student. Other countries are beating us with education statistics because they have more privatized education where only certain students are allowed into their system. America takes all, students in poverish areas and wealthy areas. This is what makes our numbers low. However we can be better, more challenges for students are needed.

I agree with the statement of changing the way we talk about our public schools and the professionals who work in them. Teamwork is what everything is ALL about.

The last paragraph stated the most important information. We all must engage in the road to changing education and how it will look in the future.

While I agree with the need to change the rhetoric, the suggested changes won't work as replacements for the short, simplistic phrases that have been so well used by those who can only criticize our education system. Unfortunately, the media and politicians prefer the glib generalizations over the more thoughtful nuanced statements that are offered here.
