Thank you so much for your post. I teach students with emotional and behavioral needs and I have witnessed moments of raging anger in some of my students. Sometimes when one person is set off, then the negative energy seems to spread to my other students. Thankfully, I have the assistance of counselors to help in these stressful situations. For my students, each hour they receive points based on their behavior, participation, focus, etc. Before giving the points we ask the students what they think they deserve and why. After they explain then we share what we noticed and the amount of points is given. For me, it is very important to be honest and clear with my students as to what actions made me feel they deserved these points. I feel making students be accountable for their actions and words and not ignoring situations even if we are in the middle of a lesson is very important. Also, emphasizing to them that it is their choice how they react to situations.

Thanks again for your post and I look forward to using some of these techniques in my classroom this year!
