WHAT WORKS IN EDUCATION The George Lucas Educational Foundation

Sarah Wike Loyola

I have been teaching middle, high school and university courses in Spanish for 15 years. I currently teach and am Spanish Team Leader at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. I teach AP Spanish and a paperless course titled "Spanish through Technology and Social Media" which is a hybrid of language learning and exploring new technologies. This class was named one of the "5 Classes Most Likely to Pique Student Interest" by South Park Magazine. All my classes marry language learning with the use of authentic materials. I also strongly believe in teaching language through the 3 modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) and self-organized learning. During the 2014-15 school year I was a part of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) 'Teachers of the Future' cohort and was named 'Outstanding Teacher' by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) in 2015.
