WHAT WORKS IN EDUCATION The George Lucas Educational Foundation

John Wellcome

In August I started my sixth year of service as a teacher-librarian II in America's public schools. In my current position, I help Indian kids and teenagers of all ages--from five to 18-- at the Lodge Grass, Montana, School District, which is in the Billings, Montana, area and the Sheridan, Wyoming, area. It is on the Crow Indian Reservation and serves about 300 students in grades k-12. This is not just a job for me; it is also a ministry, and God has given me a heart for serving here.
I spent the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years working as the district librarian for the Valdez City School District in Valdez, Alaska. While there I worked almost exclusively at Hermon Hutchens Elementary School, a school with about 275 students in grades k-5. Before that I worked for two school districts in Montana: I worked for one year at the Shields Valley School District, in the Bozeman area; and for two years at Arrowhead School, in the Paradise Valley. I enjoy a wide variety of books and literature, and working as a teacher-librarian is something I enjoy greatly. My hobbies are reading, freestyle swimming, hiking, backpacking, and downhill skiing.
