Emilia Askari

As a doctoral student in educational technology at Michigan State University, I'm working on a news-based game that will help develop middle school students' digital literacy and civic engagement. The game, designed to supplement language arts and social studies texts, covers key requirements of the Common Core Curriculum and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.
In addition, I teach environmental journalism at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; coach a class of Arab American middle school journalists in Dearborn, Michigan (livingtextbook.aaja.org); and produce multi-media journalism for a variety of news outlets.
In 2011, I earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan School of Information, where I studied human-computer interaction, digital archiving, social computing and other topics related to the future of news.
Before that, I was a prize-winning newspaper reporter for more than 20 years, scribbling stories for the Detroit Free Press, the Miami Herald and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. Sometimes I feel like a monk from the Middle Ages who was copying texts in careful calligraphy when Gutenberg invented the printing press.
Undergraduate degree: Brown University, bachelor's of science in economics and creative writing, before PCs.
Other master's degree: Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where we completed class assignments on manual typewriters.
I'm also the mother of a middle schooler and a high school freshman. We like to camp and attempt to learn new languages, including Spanish, French, Farsi and Pirate.
