My professional goal is to help students think for themselves. I find as a first-year instructor at a community college that students are coming out of high school unable to think critically about what they read. They are also unprepared to write with correct use of grammar, syntax, and diction. My next goal is to teach students to write well. My major hurdle is that I do not have time in a 15-week semester to teach grammar. I believe in knowing how to write well, since these students will write papers in their other classes, as well as in the workforce. I am often frustrated, wondering why students come to college without the necessary grammatical and vocabulary skills necessary to be a college-level student. I invite anyone to respond to me regarding why students are ill-prepared for college.
