I believe that all students can learn mathematics with understanding. To reach that goal we must work hard at all levels to support students and teachers. I am a professor at the University of Louisville where I teach mathematics education courses to preservice and practicing teachers. Before being at the University of Louisville, I worked at Kansas State University and the University of Missouri in teacher education. I also taught middle school in Missouri and K-12 mathematics in Lima, Peru. I participate actively in mathematics education organizations. I was just elected to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Board of Directors. I have served on the TODOS: Mathematics for All Board of Directors, President of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), and Chair of the NCTM Emerging Issues Committee.

I also write about the teaching of mathematics. I have co-authored numerous books including Mathematics Coaching: Resources and Tools for Coaches and Leaders, K-12; Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally (8th edition), and Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics: Grades Prek-2, 3-5, 6- 8; and was editor for the NCTM 2012 Yearbook. And, I write for mathematics education journals for K-12 teachers.
