I learned to become a strong advocate with my first child who was born 14 years ago with Down syndrome. There was little support in our community. I became President and Founder of DOWN RIGHT SPECIAL support group for our area. We organized the State of Vermont Down Syndrome Buddy Walk for 7 years.
Four years ago I had a strong desire to want to learn more about special education. I began working as a paraprofessional with students who have moderate to severe disabilities and knew this was a special interest of mine. I began taking classes to attain certification for special education. I begin my internship next month and will be looking for a job next spring!
From my daughters experience and my experience working in the public school system, the public school system is not working. I feel strongly that teachers need to be allowed to teach students in a wholistic environment, focusing on the students strengths and interests.
