My objective as a bilingual education teacher working with youth is to equip my students with the tools they need to understand the world around them and inspire them to feel that they can accomplish any goal. Teaching students to understand the world goes far beyond memorizing facts, formulas, and readings. Students should recognize that facts are important, but they must also understand how those facts came to be, how they are useable, and even how they may be challenged. It is a teacher's role to equip his/her students with fundamental knowledge and skills, but he/she must also guide them to understand what they are being taught, push them to achieve, teach them to think critically, and provide them with the ego strength to challenge societal views of the ability and value of the communities they live in.
