WHAT WORKS IN EDUCATION The George Lucas Educational Foundation

Kimberly Newton de Klootwyk

I spearheaded an experiential education and production house dedicated to advancing peaceful, prosperous, culturally vibrant, joyful and sustainable globalization for all. It is called Conexiones Institute and I started this social enterprise because I believe that in an increasingly globalized, diverse and interconnected world, we need educational productions and programs that offer children, youth and families real life experiences and information to help them develop applicable skills, tools, understanding, and inner and outer resources to live sustainably with their natural resources and in abundant coexistence with each other cross-culturally. Our curriculum focuses on these areas while also working to connect our students to each other, the natural world and their inner selves. Although we do in-house productions and development of educational programs, I am always looking to support and promote initiatives and content produced by others that is in alignment with our mission.

Some of our current productions include cultural immersion/service learning trips to the Costa Rican rainforest whereas students live with Costa Rican farming families (, a year-round Spanish immersion and eco-cultural field trip based program for Bay Area preschoolers (, interactive ebooks that teach children about other cultures through humorous storytelling, and a film about the social and ecological impacts of tourism and real estate speculation in Mexico with suggestions on how foreigners can integrate and align their initiatives more fully with the locals.(
