Recently, my district has adopted a program incorporation High Yield Strategies from Marzano's Classroom Instruction that Works (2001) book. This is a great book and recommends nine strategies to improve student learning. One of the things happening in my district is that we are being observed through "walk throughs" as to how often we are using these strategies. However, I found an article by Marzano warning that focusing on a narrow range of strategies is dangerous and his nine may not work in all situations. Has anyone run across a similar situation in your school or district? How familiar is anyone with high yield strategies? Which work best for you? Any disadvantages? Thanks! Joy

Hi Joy,

Our district has been implementing the walk throughs for some years now and we have been using Marzano's strategies for just as long. As with everything, when it was new to us it was used more. However, just rcently our 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade teams have begun using combination notes from Marzano's Classroom Instruction that Works (2001) and they love it. My fourth grade team is using something similar to the combination notes as well. The teacher also mentioned that the students enjoy working with combination notes. I hope this was useful.
