I am new to the world of Elementary having done all of my teaching in High School! But I was given the unique opportunity to work with teachers at an Elementary campus and am loving it! I am having some difficulty in determining "appropriate" tech skills/abilities/activities/resources for Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade students. Anyone out there have any ideas for me?

I have been doing tech integration with K-2 for about six years. KidPix and Kidspiration are two of my favorite pieces of software for K-2--you can do almost any curricular area with these two, along with Web 2.0 resources. My second graders just finished creating a video of themselves "If You Knew Me, You Would Know These Three Things" which we edited in iMovie. They can do research at a lower level--give them a list of questions, and narrow down a couple of websites to search, then they can create Powerpoint presentations and suchlike.

First graders--I have them read and create a podcast at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. These guys are learning to read, and love seeing how they grow over the year. It's good evidence for parents, too!

For kindergarten, have them work on writing an upper case and lower case letter, then illustrating it. For those K kids who are able, have them type a sentence, like "B is for Butterfly" for theirs. You will find a huge range at K; those who have had help at home, and those whose first contact with a book/pencil/computer is with you.

If you would like to email me off-list, I will be glad to help with more ideas. Good luck to you--enjoy all the hugs, a bonus benefit to teaching the little guys! : )

An awesome set of learning tools perfect for that age range comes from There are fun and catchy ABC videos, animated books that allow the students to become the main character of each story, and a whole collection of learning videos on topics like the body, outer space, and time.
