Greetings, folks,

Recently, Edutopia's Elena Aguilar blogged about what her dream school would look like. It's an inspiring post. You may also think as you read it "hey, this is possible," as several readers commented.

Citizen who understands Education is the most important piece in society.

The students would be taught from the beginning to set their own goals and measure their own progress toward those goals. Teachers would be coaches assisting kids as they learn how to educate themselves with the numerous resources around. Education would not be limited to the classroom or even the school anymore than art is restricted to a studio.

There would be no grade levels. All students would know their goals for graduation and be looking toward those goals; not cramming for tests for this year and forgetting the content a few months later. Tests would not be on a given segment of a subject, but about the entire subject. Elementary kids would be given roughly the same test as seniors in high school. The only difference would be that students about to graduate would be expected to score close to 100% while elementary would be only expected to score 20% or so and more each year as they learned more. In other words, the tests results would show progress to an overall goal.

The highest paid teachers would be those most responsible for turning around the toughest kids. Incentives would encourage teachers to seek out the kids needing the most improvement rather than getting assigned to the best kids.

They would not be expected to memorize the generals of the Union army or the formula for converting Fahrenheit to Celcius. Rather they would know the general concepts that there were several generals on the Union side and that there is a conversion formula. They could look them up or back into them as necessary.

Kids that graduated from such a system would have the attitude that learning never stops. They would have the critical skills of setting goals, measuring their progress, and problem solving to achieving their goals. These schools would create true life long learners.
