As a second year teacher, I found ClassDojo very useful in my classroom. ClassDojo allowed me to reach out to parents, help students focus on specific behaviors that were unproductive in our little community and over 80% of my students’ parents were signed up by December. My students liked the fact that they could change their monsters and see their own points. Next year, I plan to use the system a little differently, but I want to know, how do you use ClassDojo? If you don’t use ClassDojo, what other system do you use?

Longtime fan of Class Dojo but have never gotten it to work, mostly because I have 500+ students (5 classes of 20-25 kids each) and need a solution for the entire lot of 'em. What categories do you have set up? I use a simple tally mark system on a dry-erase board to keep track of when kids do a great job +1's and when they fall short -1's. It works for us!

I had a split class of 30 students so definitely no where near as many but I'd be interested to see how it could be useful at a large amount.

I have points for center behavior, stellar work, prepared for school, and others. My favorite is teach the class. A student prepares a quick lesson (5 mins) about a subject. Most students choose math which I love since they are really getting involved. But they earn extra credit for their grade and points in our community. Parents enjoy knowing about their child's effort in class. My most deductions happen the first month or two but after that very few.

Do you have individual names of students or numbers posted for the tally system? Or is it collective?

I have downloaded the app before, but never got around to using it...yet.

I'm curious- I see you have some good positive categories for earning points. How specifically do you feel the Dojo addresses the " specific behaviors that were unproductive in our little community."

What types of unproductive behaviors were you targeting?

Was just having those positive categories and parent buy in enough to get many kids to change their behavior? Were there other systems in place to support the Dojo.

I love the teaching the class mini lesson part you describe- I have kids do this often and find it REALLY useful for tuning in those kids who have tuned part of the lesson out. But I usually have them teach on the fly- I'm sure some students really love preparing the lessons beforehand.

I think ClassDojo is a good product that's generally built around classroom management principles that I have no interest in.

However, I do love the way that Matt Gomez repurposed it with his Kindergartners for keeping track of their center work, as seen here

I only had 7 behaviors that I took points off last year. Out of uniform (which was a problem in my school), being unprepared, incomplete/missing homework, blurting, distracting other during centers, disrespecting a classmate or adult, and messy workspace. The parent support really helped and also the immediate tiny rewards like a seat cushion instead of the hard chair for the day. Also, it made my subs lives a little easier. Students knew no matter who was in my room dojo points could be earned or lost.

Most of my kids were a little nervous about speaking "unscripted" and having something to refer to helped them.
