Would You Give One a Try?: The Latest In Gas-Saving Transportation

March 12, 2007

I am working in New Hampshire this week, and I have been staying in Concord, the state capital, for the last couple days. Today is an off day, so I was heading out to find a barbershop (please see attached image for evidence of need) around 10:30 A.M. or so when I passed by the local Segway dealership. (You know the Segway, inventor Dean Kamen's innovative electric scooter?) I had stopped in here once before to try this unique device out, and here I was without any professional appointments in my way, so I had to stop again!

Oh, it was fun. The shop has a smooth linoleum floor with plenty of open space that allows even a novice user to move around easily. Within moments, my body remembered how to make the device move by leaning, and I was navigating in a way that reminds me of the technique I used when I flew hang gliders in the late 1970s.

Here is my question to the Edutopia community: "If you had a chance to take a ride on a Segway, would you? Why or why not?" I look forward to hearing your thoughts -- and, hey, if you get a chance, I suggest you try it.
