Emotional and social intelligence

Here I am in March of a year with my 8th grade science students. I'm finally getting to know them well enough for them to actually expect that I can teach them something of value to themselves. Even though we are through with state testing for the year, they are walking into my room with some degree of enthusiasm for learning. I'm stunned! Well, sort of...
"Why is this the case?", you ask. Middle school students are the most challenging and the most resistent to "being taught".
I attribute our success to my unrelenting efforts to forge strong teacher-student relationships with them. They need to know and trust me before they will let me lead them. I don't blame them there. I need to know them and see them as individual people so that I know how to motivate them, talk to them, and encourage them.
I'm one of those people who continues to learn even when it isn't required by my principal. My lastest in depth study to help my me and my students have a better experience in class is Daniel Goleman and his books on emotional and social intelligence. These things work in business but they can also be very powerful in the classroom. The more I know the more I can do what I love to do...teach, encourage, foster development in young people.

What's Missing in Ed Degree Programs?

If more teacher ed programs included highly accomplished teachers as real partners (read paid faculty, adjuncts, guest instructors, team teachers.....), not only in instruction of teacher candidates, but also in the designing of their programs, new teachers would also get more of the other two options as well.
