I teach at Manual Arts High School in the Freshman Preparatory Academy which was recently formed. We had considerable success in improving test scores and more importantly feeling like we helped students last year (2010-2011). Despite that success it seems like we are continuously punished with staff reductions, resource reductions, unnecessary campus crowding, and routinely blamed for what the school has not achieved. Manual is at the center of a the classic fight between teachers and administration (Warren Fletcher union president was just here last week, Oct 8th 2011, using it as a focal point to ask for the 55 million surplus the district has). My goal is to keep my passion for learning with students alive while negotiating the realities of this education landscape.
