I started my career in education and the arts as a history teacher and utilized my rich background in the arts to find a common language with which to discuss integrated learning. I have written a couple of books on the subject (Heinemann, Dana Press). I am passionate about the gifts and perils of integrated instruction: the gift? greater understanding of an idea, fact, trend, in the social sciences and the technique and use of the thinking processes associated with art and design. The peril: trivializing the search for ideas, dumbing down the content to a level of meaninglessness, and accepting "anything" as "good job" in the making/composing/discussing an object or performance or other work of art.
