I'm a retired teacher educator who has worked in schools as part of my work my whole professional life. I began back in the open education days, back when the assessment worries had to do with could you write good behavioral objectives a la Robert Mager and others. I've always felt good targeted skill instruction coupled with ample amounts of family grouping, inquiry based, large interdisciplinary unit work was the way to keep children excited about their work and learning on the edges. Still do.
