Over the last twenty years, I have directed an occupational and environmental health program at the American Federation of Teachers. I have tracked the impact of occupational and environmental exposure on staff and students. We have been all together negligent at improving conditions in schools and school settings (i.e. buses, playing fields). The result a high prevalence of asthma, stress-related illnesses, communicable diseases and ergonomic problems in both children and staff. We can do so much better.
