I moved down to Texas in 2001 when I joined the Houston Teach for America corps. My original placement was in a fifth grade English classroom in a high achieving HISD (Houston Independent School District) elementary school. I remember feeling disheartened when my students came back and talked to me about the poor quality of education they were getting at their local junior high school. As soon as I heard about YES, I began taking as many students and parents as possible to visit. After my first visit to YES I was sold and interviewed for a position the following year. This is my 6th year at YES North Central and I am sure there will be many more.
