Harrison Central High's use of technology lends itself to multiple practical and exploratory applications. The technology allows the students to improve their performance in both their physical and academic activities by recording and displaying clear and tangible evidence that students could easily interpret and understand. As one of the science teachers suggested, the key is that the integration of technology in the traditional curriculum leads to discovery, and what enhances the experience of discovery is the cooperation and collaboration with peers.

Since my interests lie in language arts, I would like to see how technology integration works in that field of instruction. The interactive quality of technology would remove some of the anxiety associated with literary study or with understanding grammar and composition.

A high school filled with technology

WOW! This is what school should be like. I wonder how they are funding these classes as we are stuggling to buy paper and pencil in my district.

Amazing

I really want to know as much as these teachers know about these gadgets and the way students are involved in their learning process. This is the way teaching-learning processes should be done because the students are developing their thinking skills which is the main target education has.

Technology in Schools

The video on Harrison Central was inspiring. It makes you stop and realize that technology and analytical skills are what students today need to have to be successful.
Kudos for the integration of all the different active learning and learning for understanding strategies. I would like to hear from other teachers that are using advanced technology in their content area, to know what else is available to help students visualize difficult concepts.

Harrison HS

I am impressed with this school's use of technology! I have a few questions about it: Do all their teachers recieve training on the use of the technology, or just the Science and Math teachers? What kinds of technology are used by Language Arts classes (besides word processing or PowerPoint)? On the video, the class sizes seemed pretty small - are small classes a priority for this school district? I would think that smaller classes allow more students access to the technology.

How did they do this? How long did it take them to get to this point? ALL schools in America need to be like this. HELP!

Harrison Central

This high school shows the great potential of students and teachers to make learning relevant and rigorous. The video demonstrates that students need to be actively involved in the application phase of their learning.

Since we have such an emphasis on standardized testing,it would be interesting to note their scores as well. The research indicates that the scores will rise. I, professionally do not believe that the current wave of testing is a true indication of learning, but we need to address this issue when we propose changes to the stereotypical high school.

It would also be interesting to see the data about major school discipline problems and note whether or not this approach has improved discipline aand school climate as well.

A great video -

TD

Language Arts/English

There are many places to use technology in language arts. Virtual field trips to authors' home towns or settings of books; students can write scripts using scenes from stories/books they read and videotape them; students can draw timelines using the computer or make maps of the settings of stories using a draw program; make a comic book from a story using the computer (I used Word, but there are other programs as well); class newspapers with pictures using digital cameras - these could also be newspapers using the plots of stories/books/plays, etc; use Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com to look up book reviews, etc. There are lots of ways technology can be mined for language arts students. Our school has written a grant for an Interactive Response System ("clickers")and these can be used in EVERY classroom to do the quiz show format they demonstrated on the video. We also wrote grants for iPod Touches to be used in classrooms. Kids feel more connected when they can use technology like they use every day --- and they feel really smart when they can teach the teacher how to use it!

This is how exciting high school should be

I teach preschool in Aumsville Oregon. After watching the video from Harrison Central, I almost wanted to teach high school! The students in this school seem to be having a great time learning and building relationships with their teachers. I would imagine that the technology really gets these students ready for the real world after graduation.
I also wonder how this is funded.
Thank you for the inspiring video.
