Smart Hearts: Social and Emotional Learning Overview

In school districts from New Haven to Anchorage, social and emotional skills are being taught and assessed just like skills in math and reading are. (See a Spanish-subtitled version.) Read a short introductory article or watch a brief introductory video.

I am a 30 years old Indian doctor and just was wondering what if I become a kid again and go through this education, it really will be fantastic. I then thought, as long as I have a spirit to learn, I am a kid and I don't need to throw away my age. I can be a kid with this age.

I really loved that would be looking forward to see the result of such a teaching on kids. I would also be interested if there is such a training for adults.
many thanks

manage emotions before academics

This is a great video and I encourage all administrators to use this with their staff. In return have the staff to use strategies to start the day off. Hopefully more learning will take place throughout the day and discipline will go down.
I am also starting to involve my parents.

This is a wonderful video! I wish the district I work in would adopt this attitude. We have so much conflict and violence. Emotional Health is so important, without it learning is basic. Students are leaving High School with a distaste for learning instead of a love for learning. The NO Child Left Behind is a wonderful program, but has most of us teaching for the test. The love of learning is gone and there is an increase in school violence and unrest. We have to start reevaluating the way we teach our children. It should be quality and not quantity. If we have quality the love for learning will come.

Change of Heart program

I really thought this video was very informative. It gave insights on how to have students be a better person. I wish my school can incorporate the Change of Heart Program, so that students do not bully others or hurt each other anymore.

Social-Emotional Video

I started my career in a school that valued and taught social and emotional skills and we had very few referrals. I now teach in a school that is the exact opposite- the bullying goes up every year, the students do not feel safe. I wish our district would adopt the policies and curriculum suggested in this video. I know it works.

Teaching social and emotional skills

I really enjoyed the video. I think it is very important to include social and emotional education in the classroom. It is evident that our children experience so much at home and in the world. We must teach our children how to cope and overcome issues that can hender them from learning and growing. As a teacher, I think we see "Oh! Another program" we get discoaurage. But, we must keep in mind that we teach for the children. Our ultimate goal is to increase postive learning. You can teach a child so much more when you have gained their trust and support. I think it is well worth the effort.

I really enjoyed the video on Social Emotional development. As a special education middle school teacher of students with behavior/social/emotional disabilities, I try to incorporate these skills in my daily lessons. I do think it would be extremely bennificial if our district adopted a curriculum that was used on a regular basis.

Change of Heart

Great video. As a special education teacher in an alternative setting, I incorporate social skills and use teachable moments on a daily basis. I think a curriculum regarding social/emotional learning standards is an awesome idea.
